Baseball Team Opens Season With Dramatic Win

The MSJC baseball team kicked off the 2010 season with a ninth inning rally to defeat host San Diego Mesa 2-1.

The Eagles, who were held to just six hits on the afternoon, trailed 1-0 going into the ninth. Matt Palmer quickly evened up the score to lead off the ninth with a solo homerun. Garret Caldwell and Devin Greco followed with back to back singles and on Greco's base hit Caldwell advanced to third. Two batters later Travis Hansen hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Chris Houston, who had come on to pinch run for Caldwell giving the Eagles the lead at 2-1.

Josh Peters picked up the win on the mound for the Eagles going 8 innings and allowing just 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 6. Peters did not allow a walk in the game. Scott Simmons came on in the ninth to pick up the save walking one and striking out 2. The big play in the bottom of the ninth came after Simmons had walked the lead off hitter, but catcher Kory Costelo picked him off at first base.

The Eagles 1-0 on the season will host Mesa on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 pm.
