Eagles Get Big Win, Stay in Play-Off Hunt

The MSJC baseball team bounced back from a disappointing loss on Thursday to take the third of a three game series from Grossmont Friday to keep their post season hopes alive with a 12-6 win in El Cajon.valdezgmont.jpg

The Eagles scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the third when Johnny Valdez hit the first of his two homeruns on the day driving home Daniel Fernandez.  The Eagles pushed the lead to 5-0 in the top fifth when Valdez hit his second two run homer and Manny Mendoza drove in Dom des Vigne with an RBI single to left center.  Grossmont finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs off starting pitcher Auguie Gallardo to cut the lead to 5-2.

MSJC extended the lead again in the top of the sixth as they scored three times.  Valdez picked up another RBI with a single up the middle, then Kash Mattson hit a sacrifice fly scoring David Alonzo and Mendoza drove in his second run of the day with a single to right scoring Valdez.  The Eagles bullpen combination of Zac Tapia, Brian Hogencamp, and Sean Sanders went  4 and 1/2 innings allowing four runs.  Tapia took the victory going three innings allowing just two unearned runs and Sanders went 1 and 1/3 to earn the save.

Valdez finished the day going 4 for 6 with 6 RBIs to go along with his two homers.  Mattson and Mendoza each had three hits and two RBIs, while Markalexander Gamo and Joseph Favela also picked up an RBI in the win.

The Eagles are now 17-16 overall and 12-9 in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play, while the Griffons fell to 21-11 and 13-8.  MSJC finishes the regular season this week with a three game series against Southwestern.  Southwestern ins 14-7 in the PCAC and currently in second place, Grossmont, who is one game ahead of the Eagles in third finishes their season with a three game series against first place Palomar.

MSJC will be at home on Tuesday and Friday this week and will travel to Southwestern on Thursday.  All three games of the series start at 2 pm.
