Eagles Rally then Fall Short in Extra Innings
The MSJC baseball team made a furious comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at 9-9 Thursday, but lost to visiting College of the Desert in the 10th.
Ryan Shumway capped a 5 run ninth for the Eagles with a one out grand slam to knot the game up. In the top of the tenth however Matt Stutes of Desert answered with a bases loaded triple to put the Roadrunners ahead for good.
MSJC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as they scored a run in the bottom of the first, but that would be their only lead of the day. Desert scored 3 in the top of the second to take the lead that got as big as 9-4. Joe Riley and David Ricker both had three hits on the day for MSJC, one of Riley's was a solo home run. The Eagles pounded out 16 hits as a team, but also committed 6 errors on defense.
Brent Brown took the loss on the mound for MSJC as he pitched the 10th inning. Starter Josh Peters went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 earned runs while striking out 5 and walking 6. With the loss the Eagles fall to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in Foothill Conference action. The same two teams will go at it again on Saturday as the Eagles travel to Palm Desert for a double header beginning at 11 am.
