Pitching Carries Eagle Baseball Team to Victory
The MSJC baseball team used a strong pitching effort on Thursday to defeat visiting Victor Valley College 5-2 in a Foothill Conference game.
Joe Fernandez picked up his third win of the season going 7 innings and allowing just 1 earned run helping MSJC even the three game series with the Rams after the Eagles lost in 14 innings on Tuesday. Sean Sanders came out of the bullpen to get the save for MSJC going two innings and allowing no runs on two hits.
Offensively Glenn Nichols had two hits and drove in two runs for the Eagles as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. MSJC would add single runs in the bottom of the fourth and bottom of the seventh for the victory. Vince Canales, Johnny Armenta, and Chase Phillips also had an RBI for the Eagles while Jeff Ricker collected two hits.
The victory improved MSJC's overall record to 11-11 and evened their Foothill Conference mark at 7-7. The Eagles will wrap up their series with Victor Valley on Saturday when they travel to Victorville for a noon game. Next week the Eagles take a break from Foothill Conference action when they travel to Santa Ana on Tuesday and Fullerton Thursday. MSJC will host Taft in a two game set Friday and Saturday. Friday's game is set for 3 pm with Saturday's first pitch to be at 11 am.
