Eagles Can't Get Palms to Pines Trophy Back
MSJC scored the first points of the game on their opening drive Saturday night on a 31 yard field goal by Jameson Schultz, but the 3-0 lead would be the only one the Eagles had all night as the fell in the annual Palms to Pines trophy game 31-17 to host College of the Desert.
Trailing 14-3 with under a minute to go in the first half Nathon Martinez picked off a pass for the Eagles and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown. After the extra point by Schultz the Eagles went into the locker room down just 14-10.
The MSJC offense couldn't get into the end zone again until the final minute of the game despite gaining 292 yards in total offense. COD had outscored the Eagles 17-7 in the second half to account for the final score.
Courtney Pete, who made his first start at quarterback this year, led the Eagles offense with 60 yards rushing and 183 through the air. Wide out Esau Bauknight had 5 catches for 41 yards while Tyrone Richardson had 3 for 30.
The loss drops the Eagles to 0-3 on the season, while COD improves to 2-1. MSJC will start conference play this Saturday when they travel to San Diego to take on Mesa College in a 6 pm game.
