The MSJC football team used a stingy defense and a solid offensive attack on Saturday to move to 2-0 in Mountain Conference action with a 26-7 win over visiting San Diego Mesa College.
The Eagles opened the scoring early in the first as Clay Goga connected on a 24 yard field goal despite high winds that swirled for most of the game. Mesa would respond with their only touchdown of the day with just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter when Tre Roberts scored on a 20 yard reverse play to give the Olympians a 7-3 lead. Goga added his second field goal of the afternoon with 1:06 left in the opening quarter hitting this time from 31 yards out. The second quarter was a scoreless one as the MSJC defense did not allow a single passing yard by the Olympians in the first half. Mesa held the advantage at the break 7-6.
The second half would be all Eagles as Michael Harrison scored midway through the third period on a three yard run that would put MSJC ahead to stay at 12-7. MSJC would add a 32 yard TD pass from Chad Virgil to Marquis Webber early in the fourth and then put the game out of reach when Harrison scored on a 58 yard punt return just two minutes after that for a commanding 26-7 lead. The Eagle defense continued their dominate performance the rest of the way as neither team scored in the final 11 minutes.
Harrison finished the day rushing for 113 yards on 21 carries and also caught 3 passes for 44 yards. Arturo Brown just missed making it two Eagle rushers with 100 yards on the day as he garnered 99 yards on 16 rushes. Virgil finished his day 15 of 26 passing with a touchdown and one interception. On defense the Eagles held Mesa to just 184 yards of total offense. Marvin Hifo, Dejon Brown, and Sam Schwab each had 7 tackles while Jason Dixon recorded 6 to lead the Eagle defense. Tamoyia Morris recovered a fumble for MSJC in the win.
The Eagles improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in Mountain Conference play as they head into a bye week. Mesa fell to 2-3 overall and 1-1. MSJC returns to action on October 19th when they travel to Compton for a 1 pm game. The Eagles next home game will be October 26th when they host Chaffey in the 2013 Homecoming game at Carl Quandt Stadium.
