Eagles Lose Heartbreaker in Season Opener
The MSJC football team fell just short of a season opening victory Saturday afternoon as they lost to visiting Chaffey College 17-12.
Chaffey scored the winning touchdown with just 1 minute remaining in the game and any last second effort for the Eagles was cut short when the Panthers picked off their second pass of the day.
In a defensive first half the two teams combined could only muster a 40 yard field goal by Evan Johnson that gave Chaffey the 3-0 halftime lead. The Eagles got the first score of the second half when Carmen Boyer hit Courtney Pete for a 16 yard touchdown pass. MSJC however missed the extra point and at the end of the third the Eagles were clinging to a 6-3 lead.
On the first play of the fourth quarter Chaffey regained the lead when Ricky Howard caught a 23 yard pass from A.J. Springer and after Johnson added the extra point the Panthers led 10-6. MSJC answered five minutes later when Chris Chamberlin caught Boyer's second TD pass of the day. The ensuing extra point was blocked and the Eagles had a two point lead at 12-10. Chaffey's winning four play drive was capped off by a 16 yard touchdown pass to A.J. Tolbert.
Boyer finished the day 13 of 26 for 125 yards. He threw for two touchdowns and was intercepted twice. DeMarcus White led the ground game with 46 yards on 11 carries. Courtney Pete had 6 catches for 39 yards on the afternoon. MSJC will be back in action next Saturday when they host Saddleback College at 1 pm at Carl Quandt Stadium.
