Eagles Start Fast; Run to Victory

The MSJC football team scored on their first two plays from scrimmage and blocked a punt for a touchdown on the way to a 35-21 road victory Saturday at LA Southwest.

After the opening kick off the Eagles scored immediately as quarterback Nigel Barksdale (San Jacinto HS) hooked up with Chris Robinson (Hemet HS) on a 60 yard touchdown pass.  The Eagles then forced LA Southwest into a punt and on their second offensive play of the night Franex Dort (Lake Worth ,FL) went 77 yards on the ground for another touchdown putting MSJC on top 14-0 just 2:45 into the game.  The Cougars got on the board late in the first quarter as they went on an 8 play 85 yard drive to cut the lead to 14-7.  That is where the score stood until just before halftime when the Eagles forced the Cougars into a punting situation deep in their own territory with 8 seconds remaining.  Jonathan Duarte (San Jacinto HS) busted threw the middle of the Cougar line and blocked the punt and Jeremy Rykard (O'Fallon IL) was able to jump on the ball for a third Eagle touchdown with 1.5 seconds to play in the half.  Jameson Schultz (Yucaipa) added the extra point and the Eagles went to halftime up 21-7.

MSJC opened the second half on defense and forced a quick three and out by Southwest to get the ball back near midfield.  On the ensuing drive MSJC went 52 yards in 9 plays capped off by a Barksdale to Justin Laureano (Great Oak HS) 18 yard touchdown pass building the lead to 28-7.  MSJC would also add another 41 yard TD run by Dort later in the third to cap their scoring on the night.

Dort finished the game with 20 carries for 189 yards and two touchdowns.  Fellow running back Butch Tuvale (Ewa Beach HI) had a strong night as well running for 64 yards on 12 carries.  Barksdale threw for 154 yards and two touchdowns on 10 of 19 passing, he also ran the ball 11 times for 50 yards.  Schultz ended the game 5 of 5 on extra points.  The win moves MSJC to 2-2 on the season while the Cougars drop to 1-3.  The Eagles are back in action next week when they take on Southwestern College in a 6 pm game at Vista Murrieta High School.
