The MSJC football team scored the winning touchdown with just over four minutes remaining Saturday to come up with a season opening victory at Santa Monica 31-28.
The Eagles got on the board first when Jaime Lucio hit a 35 yard field goal to give MSJC a 3-0 lead. Santa Monica would get their first points late in the first quarter on a 40 yard touchdown pass to hold a 7-3 lead at the end of one period. In the second quarter Tim Morovick hooked up Jamion Lindsey for a 15 yard touchdown pass and after a two point conversion MSJC once again led 11-7. Santa Monica would again answer however and regain the lead before the half 14-11.
In the second half MSJC came out of the gates strong scoring 14 straight points and shutting out the Corsairs in the third quarter as they built a 25-14 lead on an 8 yard run by Michael Harrison and a 98 yard run by Superiorr Reid. Santa Monica stormed back in the fourth quarter to score 14 straight points of their own and take a 28-25 lead with 8 minutes remaining. The Eagles put together the winning drive on their ensuing possession capped off by a 21 yard pass from Morovick to Tyler Henderson with 4:15 to play and the defense held on for the victory.
Reid ended the game rushing 31 times for 259 yards while Morovick was 15 for 23 passing for 155 yards. Dalton Hunkle was the Eagles leading receiver pulling in 6 catches for 67 yards. Brett Layton had an interception for the Eagles defense. MSJC outgained Santa Monica on the day 432 yards to 312.
The win moved MSJC to 1-0 on the season while the Corsairs dropped to 0-1. The Eagles will have their home opener on Saturday September 8th when they host L.A. Pierce at 1 pm at Carl Quandt Stadium on the San Jacinto Campus.
Superiorr Reid ran for 259 yards on Saturday to help MSJC to a 31-28 victory at Santa Monica. The Eagles will play at home this Saturday when they host LA Pierce at 1 pm.
