The MSJC football team overcame a slow start on Saturday night to defeat San Diego Mesa College 31-21 in San Diego to move to 5-0 on the season.
The Eagles fell behind early 7-0, before quarterback Tim Morovick ran in from 6 yards out to tie the game late in the first quarter. Mesa regained the lead early in the second, before MSJC was able to reel off 17 straight points in a 3 minute and 11 second stretch to take a 24-14 lead into halftime. Jaime Lucio kicked a 48 yard field goal with 10:16 to go before half and then just a minute and a half later Michael Harrison returned a punt 68 yards to give the Eagles the lead at 17-14. Morovick then hooked up with Bryce Hintz for a 24 yard touchdown pass on MSJC's next possession to push the lead to 24-14.
The Eagles defense dominated the second half not allowing Mesa to move the ball. MSJC put the game out of reach with just over 5 minutes to go in the fourth when Morovick found Dalton Hunkle on a 6 yard pass that put the Eagles on top 31-14. Mesa scored with 5 seconds remaining for the final score of the night.
The MSJC defense held the Olympians to just 261 total yards on the night and sacked the quarterback 7 times in the victory. Michael Carreathers had 2 sacks for MSJC while Dejon Brown led in tackles with 7 while also adding a sack. Morovick finished the day 15 of 22 passing for 124 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Superiorr Reid led the ground game for the Eagles with 26 carries for 164 yards.
The Eagles, who are currently ranked #7 in Southern California and #15 in the state, improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Mountain Conference while Mesa slipped to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play. MSJC will have this week off before returning to action at home on October 13th when they host Compton College at 1 pm.
