The MSJC football team coming off back to back 6-4 seasons will begin the 2012 campaign tomorrow when they travel to Santa Monica College for a 1 pm game.
The Eagles have finished in second place two straight seasons in the American Mountain Conference and are looking to improve on that this year. Head Coach Casey Mazzotta has confidence that this year's team has the potential to reach their goal of a conference title and a bowl bid.
The Eagles have to replace All Conference quarterback Nigel Barksdale, but have a ready and able replacement in Tim Morovick who threw for four touchdowns last season as a freshman. He will be joined in the backfield by a pair of highly sought after recruits in Superiorr Reid and Michael Harrison. Nick Moore returns at running back after carrying the ball 21 times last season as a freshman. The wide receiving crew will be led by returning starter Dalton Hunkle who was second on the team a year ago with 29 catches for 392 yards.
The defense has a host of newcomers up front but do return starting linebacker Julian Yearwood who had 35 tackles and a sack in 2011 and All Region defensive tackle Anthony Gordon. Gordon led the Eagles last year with 10.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. The secondary will be anchored by returning starting safeties Doug Elliott and Mandela Mosley. Last season Elliott recorded 45 tackles for the season while Mosley made 17 tackles both each had one interception.
The Eagles also plan on having a strong kicking game with the return of All Conference kicker Jaime Lucio who made 8 of 9 field goals last season. Wilfred Mondragon will handle the punting chores for MSJC, Mondragon was a stand out kicker at San Jacinto High in 2010.
The Eagles home opener is next Saturday September 8th when they host LA Pierce at 1 pm.
Saftey Doug Elliott (top) and Quarterback Tim Morovick (bottom) return for their sophomore seasons for MSJC. The Eagles start the season on Saturday when they travel to Santa Monica for a 1 pm game.
