The MSJC football team scored the final 27 points on Saturday as they pulled away from Compton College for a 44-9 win at Carl Quandt Stadium.
The Mountain Conference victory started slowly for MSJC, but the defense stayed strong throughout the game for the win. MSJC led just 3-0 after the first quarter on a 23 yard field goal by Jaimie Lucio. The Eagles would build the lead to 17-3 at the half on touchdown runs by Superiorr Reid and Michael Harrison.
Compton started the second half by cutting the lead to 17-9, but that is as close as they would get as MSJC took the game over from that point on. Tim Morovick connected with Dalton Hunkle for a 20 yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 24-9, and Reid picked up his second touchdown of the day early in the fourth quarter to push the Eagle lead to 31-9. Lucio would add two more field goals of 32 and 33 yards and Nick Moore scored on a one yard run to finish the Eagle scoring.
Hunkle finished the day with 11 catches for 201 yards. Morovick was 16 for 28 through the air for 244 yards passing. Michael Harrison led the Eagle ground attack with 61 yards on 10 carries. Defensively the Eagles sacked the Compton quarterbacks 4 times and intercepted three passes. Linebacker Julian Yearwood had 2 sacks and Bret Layton had two interceptions to lead the way. Kamarus Bryant also picked off a pass for MSJC.
The win kept the Eagles unbeaten on the season at 6-0, they move to 3-0 in Mountain Conference action. Compton fell to 0-6 and 0-3. MSJC will be back in action on Saturday October 20th when they travel to Chaffey College for a 6 pm game.
