Football Team Comes Up Short at East LA

The MSJC football team fell behind early and could not recover on Saturday night as the Eagles lost to East Los Angeles 31-13 at Monterey Park.

MSJC fumbled on their first offensive play of the game and could not establish their offense in the first half as the Huskies built a 24-0 halftime lead.

The Eagles showed signs of a comeback in the third quarter when Josh Reed broke two long touchdown runs to pull MSJC within 24-13 with 7:09 to play in the third.  Reed's first TD was a 43 yard run with 13:11 to play in the quarter and the second was a 64 yard dash that made it an 11 point game.  The Eagles could not however score again and the Huskies tacked on one more score on the night for the 31-13 final.

Reed finished the night with 123 yards rushing on 11 carries.  Quarterback Nigel Barksdale was 12 for 17 for 208 yards through the air and was intercepted twice.  Tight end Perris Scoggins was the Eagles leading receiver Saturday pulling in 4 catches for 61 yards.;  Dalton Hunkle and Chris Robinson both caught three passes in the loss.  On defense Drake Cathcart led MSJC with 11 tackles in the game.  Moak Brown, Julian Yearwood, and Robert Patton all recorded one sack each.  Carin Matias and Samiuela Stevens also combined for a sack for the Eagles.

The loss drops MSJC to 3-4 on the season and 1-1 in Mountain Conference action, while East LA improved to 4-3 and 2-0.  The Eagles are back in action Saturday October 29th when they travel to Compton College for a 1 pm game.
