The MSJC football team started fast and held on Saturday night in a game that featured over 1,000 yards of total offense as they defeated visiting West Los Angeles College 45-42 to pick up their first win of the season.
The Eagles jumped out to a 10-0 lead as Carlton Walker scored a touchdown and Jaime Lucio booted a 25 yard field goal in the first quarter to get the night going for MSJC. After a West LA touchdown, MSJC scored three more times before the half highlighted by Emanuel Hamilton's 90 yard interception return to give the Eagles a 31-7 halftime lead.
The teams came out in the third quarter and exchanged touchdowns and the Eagles seemed to be on their way to an easy victory with the score 38-14 heading into the fourth. In the fourth West LA's offense exploded for 21 straight points to pull within 38-35 with 2:11 left to play in the game. The Eagles answered though, with a 4 play 69 yard drive culminating in a 9 yard touchdown pass from Nigel Barksdale to Chris Robinson to push the lead to 45-35 with just over a minute to play. West LA was not done however as they scored the final touchdown of the night with 8 seconds remaining. MSJC would recover the ensuing onside kick attempt to finally secure the victory.
Barksdale finished the night 11 of 20 passing for 207 yards and two touchdowns through the air, he also ran for 68 yards and two touchdowns. Walker finished the night as the Eagles top rusher carrying the ball 22 times for 99 yards. Robinson ended the night with 4 catches for 85 yards and two touchdowns. On the other side of the ball Samiuela Stevens was the Eagles top tackler on the night with 10 he also recorded a sack. Dennis Fite added 7 tackles and had an interception.
The final offensive numbers on the night were impressive for both teams as West LA finished with 654 yards of total offense, 464 of them through the air. The Eagles had 383 yards of offense in the game. The win improved MSJC to 1-2 on the season while West LA fell to 1-2. The Eagles are back in action Saturday September 24th when they return to Carl Quandt Stadium on the MSJC campus for a 1 pm game against LA Southwest.
