The MSJC football team came up less than one yard short of starting the season 2-0 with a 23-19 loss Saturday night in Rancho Cucamonga at Chaffey College.
The Eagles mounted an offensive drive in the last 5 minutes of the game that resulted in an opportunity to win with 10 seconds left, but the 4th and goal play came up just short as Chaffey held on for the victory. Running back Butch Tuvale (Ewa Beach, HI) got the hand off on 4th and goal from the 2 yard line and ran over the right side of the Eagles offensive line, but was tackled just short of the end zone.
MSJC took the lead early in the first quarter when quarterback Nigel Barksdale (San Jacinto HS) connected with tight end Perris Scoggins (Fontana Summit) on an 11 yard touchdown pass. Tuvale added a late second quarter touchdown and the Eagles led at the half 13-12. Franex Dort (Lake Worth, FL) added the Eagles last touchdown with 5:02 to go in the third quarter which gave MSJC their last lead at 19-15. Chaffey scored what ended up being the winning touchdown with 2:52 to go in the third on a 1 yard run by quarterback Jeff Ginolfi. The Eagles defense came up big with two stops in the fourth quarter, the last setting up MSJC's final drive.
On the night Dort led the offense with 90 yards rushing on 20 attempts while Tuvale and Barksdale both added 40 yards on the ground. Barksdale ended the night throwing for 104 yards going 16 for 27 through the air. Tyrone Richardson (West Valley HS) was the leading receiver pulling in 5 catches for 48 yards, while Scoggins had 4 receptions for 39 yards. Larry Dowdell (Fultondale, GA) and Matias Carin (Paloma Valley HS) led the defense with 7 tackles a piece.
The loss drops the Eagles to 1-1 on the season while Chaffey improved to 2-0. MSJC is back in action next Saturday when they travel to West L.A. for a 1 pm game.
