The MSJC football team outscored San Bernardino Valley 24-7 in the second half on Saturday to defeat the visiting Wolverines in the 2012 Homecoming game at Carl Quandt Stadium 37-27.
San Bernardino took the early lead scoring two first quarter touchdowns. The Wolverines failed on both extra point attempts and headed to the second period with a 12-0 advantage. The Eagles would get on the board with 9:22 to play in the half when quarterback Tim Morovick connected with Dalton Hunkle on a 63 yard pass. Just 3 minutes later Morovick hit tight end Brett Hays on a 45 yard scoring strike and the Eagles held a 13-12 lead. The Wolverines however answered with just 46 seconds remaining in the half when they got an 82 yard touchdown run from Dill Pretzinger to take the halftime lead 20-13.
MSJC dominated the second half as they got the ground game going and the defense shut down the Wolverines. The Eagles got to within three points with 11:09 to play in the third when Jaime Lucio hit a 27 yard field goal. On the Eagles next possession they took the lead for good when running back Superiorr Reid took a hand off and ran 47 yards for an MSJC touchdown to push the score to 23-20. MSJC extended their lead in the fourth quarter when Leroy Holt intercepted a Wolverine pass and returned it 17 yards for a touchdown with 5:36 to play in the game. The Eagles put the game out of reach once and for all on Morovick's third TD pass of the game when he hooked up with Hunkle for a 34 yard score to make it 37-20 Eagles. San Bernardino scored their final touchdown on the last play of the game for the 37-27 final.
Morovick ended his day 17 of 27 passing for 320 yards with 3 TDs and 1 interception. Hunkle had 7 catches for 174 yards while Bryce Hintz caught 5 passes for 52 yards. The ground game was led by Reid who had 190 yards on 32 carries. Michael Harrison also had a strong game rushing with 83 yards on 12 carries. The MSJC defense was led by Julian Yearwood who had a game high 13 tackles. Brett Layton along with Holt each had an interception for MSJC. The Eagles also sacked the Wolverines quarterback three times on the day with Sam Schwab and Germel Harkless each picking up a solo sack while Jaylen Brooks and Dejon Brown combined for the team's third.
The win ensured at least second place in the Mountain Conference for the Eagles as they improved to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play. The loss dropped San Bernardino to 5-4 and 4-2. MSJC will conclude the regular season when they host Victor Valley Saturday November 10th at Carl Quandt Stadium. Kick off is set for 1 pm on the 10th.
