Big Comeback Sparks Eagles
The MSJC men's basketball team fell behind early and trailed for nearly the entire game, before rallying to force overtime and coming away with a victory Saturday at San Bernardino.
The Eagles who trailed 35-26 at halftime and by as much as 18 in the second half got the win 90-82 to move to within one game of conference leader Antelope Valley. Tim Island, Mark Williams, and Lee Stephens were the stars of the game as they scored 24, 23, and 20 points respectively for MSJC. The Eagles defense turned up the heat midway through the second half forcing the Wolverines into a number of turnovers that allowed MSJC back into the game. With SBVC ahead by 2 and with the ball and less than 20 seconds the Eagles forced one more turnover to get the ball back. On the inbound play the Eagles missed a shot, but Island got an offensive rebound and put it back up, the ball still wouldn't fall for MSJC, but finally Dejuan Flowers tipped the ball in with 0.8 seconds remaining to force overtime.
In the overtime period the Eagles came out hot getting a three pointer each from Island and Mark Williams to quickly build a six point lead. From there MSJC made enough free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory.
The win improved MSJC to 24-4 overall and 8-2 in Foothill Conference action. The Eagles victory coupled with Antelope Valley's loss Saturday to Rio Hondo moved MSJC to within one game of first place in the conference.
