The MSJC men's basketball team won three straight games over the weekend in San Diego as they claimed the Championship of the SD City Knights Invitational.
The Eagles opened the tourney on Friday afternoon with a victory over El Camino 68-51. Dwayne Benjamin led three MSJC players in double figures with 17 points. Dajuan Smith added 12 and Levon Harper came off the bench to score 11. The Eagles had just a 28-23 lead at halftime, but slowly pulled away throughout the second half.
On Saturday in the semi-finals MSJC defeated Citrus 84-83 in a game that the Eagles led by 6 with under a minute to go. Benjamin was once again the leading scorer for MSJC with 29 points. Sam Williams came off the bench to add 24 and Smith reached double figures for the second game in a row with 16.
In the title game on Sunday MSJC took a three point lead into the locker room against Mt. SAC and then pulled away in the final five minutes for a 66-49 win. Benjamin, who was named the tournament MVP, led the Eagle offense for the third straight day with 24 points, he also pulled in a team high 11 rebounds. Williams added 10 points while Harper had 9 for MSJC. Williams was also named to the all tournament for his play over the weekend.
The Eagles who are now 5-1 on the season, will take a few days off before playing their home opener on Wednesday November 27th against College of the Desert. Game time on the 27th is 7 pm.
