Eagles Cruise Past COD in Home Opener
The MSJC men's basketball team kicked off the holiday weekend in grand fashion on Wednesday night as they won their 2013-14 home opener over College of the Desert 103-74.
The Eagles took an early lead and never looked back as Oregon bound sophomore Dwayne Benjamin scored a career high 38 points as MSJC slowly pulled away in the second half. Eleven different MSJC players reached double figures in minutes played and two other had over 8 as head coach Patrick Springer showed off the Eagles depth in the game. Dajuan Smith had 14 points for in the victory.
The Eagles shot just 15 of 43 in the first half, but built an eight point halftime lead by dominating the Roadrunners on the glass. MSJC out rebounded COD 32-18 in the first half and 60-42 on the night. Benjamin was also the top rebounder for the Eagles as he pulled in 13. Point guard Carlos McCormick had a solid game with 7 points and 7 rebounds. Amonte Dees came off the bench to bury three, 3 point shots to add 9 points.
The win for MSJC was their sixth in a row and improved their record on the season to 6-1. MSJC has the week off before playing in the Riverside Holiday Tournament beginning on December 11th. The Eagles open the RCC event with a 5 pm game next Wednesday against East Los Angeles.
