Eagles Knock Off Top Ranked Irvine
The MSJC men's basketball team got off to a strong start on Thursday and never really looked back as they defeated the state's #1 ranked team Irvine Valley 59-41 in the first round of the Bill Brummel Classic at Saddleback.
Patric Bowens took advantage of his first start of the season scoring 6 of his 8 points in the first three minutes to get MSJC out of the gates fast. The Eagles defense was solid throughout the game as they held IVC to just 5 field goals in the first half as the Lasers shot just 28% in the first 20 minutes. MSJC was able to build the lead to 30-19 by the break.
In the second half timely shooting and a continued strong defensive effort allowed the Eagles to keep the Lasers at a distance. Irvine Valley was able to cut the lead to 6 with 17 minutes remaining in the game, but that would be as close as they got as the Eagles slowly pulled away the rest of the way.
Levon Harper led the Eagles balanced offensive attack with 13 points, while Carlos McCormick and Dajuan Smith both added 11. Dwayne Benjamin just missed a double double with 9 points and 8 rebounds. The win improved the Eagles record to 7-3 on the season while Irvine lost for the first time falling to 12-1. MSJC returns to action tonight when they play San Diego City College in the semi-finals of the Brummel Classic. Tonight's game at Saddleback is set to tip-off at 5 pm.
