Eagles Win COD Tournament; Start Season 3-0
The MSJC men's basketball team started the season by winning the College of the Desert Frank Garcia Classic over the weekend as they beat Palomar Friday in the semi-finals and Long Beach City in Saturday's Championship game.
In Friday's semi-final the Eagles beat Palomar in a close game 81-76. MSJC held a one point lead at the half 36-35 and didn't put the game away until a steal by D'Anthony Peterson with 6 seconds remaining led to a pair of free throws to make it a two possession game. Dwayne Benjamin led the Eagle offense with 22 points he also was strong on the boards pulling down 10 rebounds. Montreal Harris added 17 points and Peterson ended the night with 13.
In Saturday's championship game MSJC started fast and never looked back as they blew out Long Beach City 104-66. The Eagles raced out to a 50-32 lead at the half. Mylin Jordan was MSJC's leading scorer in the final with 23 points while Benjamin added 20.
Harris was named MVP of the tournament and Benjamin was named to the All Tournament team. MSJC now 3-0 on the season will return to action Friday when they open the San Diego City Tournament at 7 pm. The Eagles who were ranked #2 in the CCCMBCA Southern Region pre-season poll will take on the South #1 ranked team in Citrus.
Montreal Harris was named MVP of the Frank Garcia Classic held at College of the Desert over the weekend as he helped the MSJC men's basketball team to the championship and a 3-0 record.
