Eagles Win First Place Showdown
The MSJC men's basketball team took over sole possession of first place in the PCAC North Division on Wednesday night as they defeated visiting Grossmont College 70-57.
The Eagles got off to a fast start as they grabbed a 16-6 lead in the first five minutes of the contest. MSJC went on to build the halftime lead to 34-24 behind 16 first half points from Dwayne Benjamin and two three point baskets by Danny Hopkins. The Eagles kept control in the second half as the lead swelled to as much as 20 with just under six and a half minutes to play.
Benjamin finished the game with 33 points and 13 rebounds. Sam Williams came off the bench to add 10 points while Hopkins and Carlos McCormick both had 8 points a piece.
The victory for the Eagles was their ninth in a row and gave them a one game lead over Grossmont in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference North Division. MSJC is now 15-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while Grossmont fell to 11-6 and 3-1. The Eagles return to action on Wednesday when they travel to San Diego Mesa for a 7 pm game.
