Eagles Win Two Before Falling in Title Game
The MSJC men's basketball game won twice at the Bill Brummell Classic in Mission Viejo this weekend before losing to Saddleback in the Championship game.
The Eagles kicked off the tournament Thursday with a 59-57 win over Irvine Valley. The game wasn't decided until Melvin Goins hit two free throws with less than :02 to play. Goins led the way in the game with 20 points and 4 assists while Mark Williams added 10 points and 6 rebounds.
In the semi-final game five different Eagles scored in double figures as MSJC beat Long Beach City for the second time this season 76-66. The Eagles trailed 2-0 in the game and then never again as their balanced attack was led again by Goins with 13 points. Williams also had 13 while Terrance Williams and Will Caesar each had 11 and Shenon Johannes added 10.
In the championship game the Eagles played a strong first half going into the break with a 35-29 lead. Saddleback however rallied to win the game, which saw the lead change hands 10 times, 64-57. Goins had 17 points and 5 assists in the losing effort while Sam O'Shea added 10 points and 5 rebounds. For their efforts in the tournament Goins and Williams were named to the All Tournament Team.
The Eagles now stand at 9-7 on the season. MSJC returns to action December 29th and 30th when they host the Kiwanis Holiday Tournament. Monday Long Beach City and L.A. Valley play at 5 pm with MSJC to follow at 7 pm against Olympic College (WA). Tuesday the consolation game will be at 5 pm and the championship at 7 pm.
