Hot Shooting Eagles Hold On at Chaffey

The MSJC men's basketball team held on to sole possession of first place in the Foothill Conference on Wednesday with a 72-71 win over Chaffey in Rancho Cucamonga.dannychaffey.jpg

The Eagles shot a blistering 62% from the field for the game, but had to rely on two late free throws by Danny Hopkins to seal the victory with 5 seconds left in the game.  MSJC who struggled at the free throw line all night shooting just 52%, pushed the lead to 72-68 on the Hopkins foul shots.  Chaffey was able to hit a 28 foot jumper to cut it to one with less than a second to play, but the Eagles were able to get the ball in bounds for the victory.

Anthony Dees led a balanced Eagle scoring attack with 17 points.  Montreal Harris was a force inside the paint for MSJC scoring 15 points and pulling in a game high 12 rebounds.  Taylor Bell added 13 points including a huge three point basket with less than 2 minutes to play to put the Eagles up for good.  Josh Gouch scored 11 points in the victory and D'Anthony Peterson added 9 points off the bench.

The win improved MSJC's overall record to 21-4 and sent them to 10-1 in the Foothill Conference.  Chaffey fell to 7-4 in conference and 17-9 overall.  The Eagles remain one game ahead of San Bernardino Valley in the race for the conference championship with three games left to play.  MSJC will travel to Victor Valley on Saturday for a 3pm game.  The Eagles will conclude the regular season next week with a pair of home games against Rio Hondo and Antelope Valley.

Danny Hopkins had just two points Wednesday night, but they were big, as he sank two free throws with 5 seconds left to help MSJC to a 72-71 victory over Chaffey and keep the Eagles in first place in the Foothill Conference.
