The MSJC men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker at home on Saturday 60-57 to the state's fourth ranked team, Antelope Valley College.
The Eagles and Marauders traded punches for the first 20 minutes with both teams shooting over 45% in the first half. MSJC would eventually go to the locker room with a 35-33 lead. In the second half the Eagles struggled to keep up the shooting pace going just 8 for 31 from the floor, but their aggressive defense kept them in the game. With AVC going back and fourth with leads between 3 and 8 points most of the final 10 minutes, MSJC did rally for one last shot to send the game to overtime after two missed free throws by AVC gave the Eagles a chance. MSJC couldn't get two last second three point attempts to fall and came up three points short.
Dwayne Benjamin was the top scorer for MSJC on the day with 13 points, while Montreal Harris just missed a double double with 10 points and 9 rebounds. D'Anthony Peterson and Mylin Jordan both had 9 points in the loss for the Eagles.
The loss dropped MSJC to 14-8 overall and 2-5 in Foothill Conference play while AVC improved to 14-6 and 6-1. The Eagles will have Wednesday off before returning to action on Saturday February 2nd when they travel to Victor Valley for a 3 pm game. MSJC returns home on Wednesday February 6th when they host College of the Desert at 7 pm.
