The MSJC men's basketball team picked up three victories over the weekend as they captured the championship at the San Diego City College Tournament.
The Eagles opened the tournament with a 90-81 win over Citrus College who came into the season as the #1 ranked team in Southern California. Four MSJC players scored in double figures on Friday led by freshman Dwayne Benjamin who had 25 points and 8 rebounds. Hassante Manning added 15 points and 9 rebounds in the victory. Montreal Harris had 14 points and D'Anthony Peterson chipped in with 10.
In Saturday's semi final game the Eagles defeated College of Sequoias 73-65. This time Harris led the way with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Benjamin added 18 points as MSJC overcame a 1 point halftime deficit to advance to the championship game.
The Eagles kept it rolling on Sunday as they beat the host San Diego City team 95-89 for the title. Harris again led the charge offensively with 27 points he also had 8 rebounds. Benjamin scored in double figures as well for the third straight day with 19. Manning had 12, Mylan Jordan had 11, and Sam Natt contributed 10 points in the championship game.
For their efforts over the weekend Harris was named the tournament's MVP and Benjamin was named to the All Tournament Team. The Eagles are now 6-0 on the season. MSJC returns to action on Friday when they begin play in the Palomar Thanksgiving Tournament.
