Men's Basketball Wins Two of Three to Open Season

The MSJC men's basketball team started the season this past weekend when they traveled to the City College of San Francisco Tip-off Tournament.

The Eagles won their first two games before falling to the host City College Rams in the championship on Sunday.  In Friday's opening round game MSJC used 25 points from Eric Lawton and 22 points and 15 rebounds from Dakota Downs to beat Siskyous 88-80.  In the semi-final round Saturday again Lawton (21 points, 8 rebounds) and Downs (20 points, 14 rebounds) were big as the Eagles beat Porterville 78-73.  The Eagles had built a big second half lead before a late surge by Porterville made the game close.  Back to back three point baskets by Taylor Bell and Bucky Chenault helped put the game away for MSJC.

In Sunday's championship game the Eagles were tied with less than 7 minutes to go with the state's #1 ranked team City College of San Francisco.  Great foul shooting down the stretch by the Rams put the game away for CCSF.  Downs had a huge game scoring 33 points and grabbing 12 rebounds on the way to being named to the All Tournament Team and Lawton hit double figures for the third straight game with 17.

The Eagles who are now 2-1 on the season will be back in action this weekend November 12-14 when they travel to the San Diego City Knights Invitational.  The Eagles open play in that tournament Friday at 3 pm against Palomar.
