Eagles Come Up Just Short of State Title
The MSJC men's tennis team came up just short of a state title on Thursday as they couldn't quite overcome a 4-2 singles deficit on their way to a 5-4 loss to Fresno City College.
The Eagles who completed the team portion of the season at 23-6 battled all afternoon at Balboa Tennis Club in San Diego, but came up just a point short of the school's first ever team state championship. Godi Enock got the scoring started for MSJC as he won his singles match 6-2 and 6-2 to push the Eagles out to a 1-0 lead. Luis Jaimes picked up the other MSJC singles victory rallying to win his match 2-6, 6-3, and 6-1. The most competitive singles match of the day involved Eagle Alex Miehle, but he came up just short losing 6-3, 4-6, and 3-6.
Heading into the doubles matches down 4-2 the Eagles needed a sweep of the three matches to take the title. Jaimes teamed with Mensford Owusu to keep MSJC alive with a 6-2 and 6-4 victory and then Enock and Pedro Liberio followed suit tying the team score at 4-4 with a 6-4, 6-3 win. In the final remaining match to decide the title Miehle and Laszlo Irme came up short in a very entertaining match losing 5-7 and 3-6.
This season marked the farthest any tennis team has advanced in school history. Four Eagles will continue play today in the individual state tournament. Owusu and Jaimes will play singles as well as team up in doubles, while Irme and Miehle will also play in the doubles competition.
