Eagles Split a Pair of Matches

MSJC Mens tennis traveled to Ventura College this past saturday afternoon and went to battle for 4 grueling hours against the defending state champions. The eagles fought hard and the match was much closer than the previous encounter in last season's southern california state dual team semi-final matchup. This time around the singles matches at the top were very competitive and #1 player Emmanuel Mensah remained undefeated in singles play. #2 player Taylor Witt lost his match in a very close 3 set battle and #3 Bruno Reich played hard but also lost. Unfortunately, #5 player, Richard Tetteh was unavailable for saturdays match due to a leg injury and this proved to be the deciding factor at the bottom of the line-up. The doubles matches were very intense and extremely competitve. All good things must come to an end and saturday was that unfortunate day for the #1 ranked ITA doubles team. Mensah and Witt sprung out to a big lead in the 8 game pro-set in their match 4-1 but were unable to hold momentum and the Ventura team consisting of 1/2 of last seasons doubles state champion (Hassan Abbas) fought back to even the match at 8-8. This led to a 8 game pro-set tie break where the eagles had match point but were unable to convert and finally tasted defeat as a doubles team. The #2 team of Reich and Marquez also battled hard and fell short of victory as did the #3 eagle team (Hotchkiss and Park).
The Eagles returned to conference play this tuesday and also returned to their winning ways by dominating El Camino College @ Long Beach City College by the score of 8-1. Emmanuel Mensah remained undefeated for the season. MSJC returns to Long Beach City College this thursday to continue conference play against Long Beach City College @ 2pm.
