MSJC Men's Tennis Advances to Regional
The MSJC men's tennis team had a very successful weekend at the Pacific Coast Conference Tournament advancing two singles players and all three doubles teams to the Southern California Regional next week in San Diego.
The Eagles who finished the regular season 15-5 overall and 10-4 in PCC play were led by singles semi-finalist Dan Nguyen-Huu. Huu had a conference singles record of 11-3, while he and doubles partner Vladamir Zabadayev also advanced to the So. Cal Regional. The doubles team of Victor Villareal and Antone DeAnda had an outstanding conference season finishing unbeaten at 14-0. The third doubles team to qualify for the Regional was the pairing of Skyler Verloop and Jake Magnant. Verloop, who has accepted a scholarship to Bethany College, next year, also qualified in singles.
The Eagles finished the regular season as the 16th ranked team in Southern California and will participate in the prestigious Ojai Tournament this week. According to head coach John Norman, "We expect to have a good showing at Ojai." Huu enters the tournament as the #13 seed in the entire state, while he and Zabadayev are seeded 10th in doubles. MSJC, who only qualified one doubles team for the Regionals last season, finished third in the PCC despite improving on last year's 9-5 league mark that earned them a second place finish.
The Regional tournament which follows Ojai will be held at next week at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. Qualifiers from that tournament will participate in the State Finals the following week.
