Men's Tennis Beats Long Beach; Loses at Desert

The MSJC Eagles battlled College Of the Desert Tuesday at the Ironwood Country club in Palm Springs with sole posession of 1st place in the South Coast Conference up for grabs. COD, whom have won an astonishing 12 state mens tennis team titles in past 18 years, definetely gave the visiting eagles a humbling experience in todays match. Unfortunately, #1 singles player Emmanuel Mensah tasted defeat for the 1st time in his JC career in singles. Playing at about 50% due to a flu bug which has been hampering him since early last week, Mensah was unable to compete at his full playing abilities and this allowed Tiago Hayashi (cod- #5 ITA ranked player 2008) to effectively defeat Mensah in straight sets. Nevertheless, Mensah fought hard and never gave up! #2 singles player Taylor Witt also played very well and came up a little short, losing in a 3rd set super tie breaker. The eagles managed to salvage 2 points in the doubles at #1 and #3. Mensah and Witt remain undefeated in conference play at #1 doubles. Kenny Hotchkiss and RIchard Tetteh remained undefeated this season so far at the #3 doubles spot. MSJC completes its 1st round of South Coast Conference matches this thursday with a rain-make up against Mt. San Antonio College @ Mt Sac at 2pm.

MSJC Mens Tennis visited Long Beach City College last thursday for a 1st round South Coast Conference match up and made quick work of the undermanned LBCC squad. Long Beach played the match with only 5 players which gave the eagles a 2-0 lead without playing a point. This had little to do with the outcome of the match which ended up in a 9-0 landslide with the eagles losing a total of 3 games in singles and 5 games in doubles. MSJC played sat out #1 player Emmanuel Mensah who has been fighting the flu bug. #2 Taylor Witt also took the day off.
