This past week Mt San Jacinto College competed at the ITA small college championships at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama (Oct 16-19). Emmanuel Mensah and Taylor Witt represented the MSJC Mens Tennis respectively in singles and doubles pla
Emmanuel Mensah had a very tough draw and started the singles tournament in match play against the #2 seed from Abraham Baldwin Community College. It was a tight match which ended up as a tough loss for Mensah 6-4, 6-4. However, Mensah was able to bounce back and dominate in his next 2 matches which also rewarded him with the final position of #5 singles player in the nation in Junior College Tennis.
The Doubles team consisting of Emmanuel Mensah and Taylor Witt came into the tournament as the #4 seeds and were matched up against a team from Meridian Community College in the 1st round. Mensah and Witt continued to show why they dominated the Southern California ITA regionals last month with a solid 6-3, 6-4 victory. In the semi-finals they were matched up against the #1 seeds from Laredo Community College. This match was a very tough one and though Menshah and Witt battled like champions they came up a little short in a 6-1, 6-1 loss, which put them in a position to play for the #3 doubles ranking in the nation for junior colleges and also the undisputed #1 doubles ranking in california junior colleges as they were pitted against the top team from the north, Fresno City College.
The battle of California was intense and hard fought but the solid serving, returning and overall net play from the doubles team of Mensah and Witt proved to be a little to strong for their counterparts up north, coming away with a solid 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Overall, MSJC was very well represented at this 1st ever national college tennis appearance. A huge thank you goes out to all those who made this possible...College President Roger Shultz, Athletic Director Patrick Springer, MSJC Tennis Coach John Norman and many others whom have supported the tennis program!
