The MSJC football team scored first, but couldn't hold onto the lead as they lost Saturday night against Southwestern 21-7 at Olympian High School in Chula Vista.
The Eagles scored with 8:51 to go in the first half when quarterback Tim Morovick connected with wide out Dalton Hunkle on a 9 yard touchdown pass to grab a 7-0 lead. The touchdown was set up by safety Mandela Mosley who intercepted a pass and returned it 46 yards to the Southwestern 10 yard line. The Jaguars tied the game late in the first half when Frank Foster ran in from one yard out to send the game to halftime 7-7.
MSJC moved the ball into scoring position on their second possession of the second half, but Jamie Lucio had a short field goal blocked and Southwestern took advantage. The Jaguars scored the go ahead touchdown on the ensuing possession on a 39 yard pass play with 4:06 to play in the third quarter. The Eagle offense moved the ball on several series, but were unable to come away with any more points. Southwestern added the final score of the game on a 3 yard touchdown run with 9:41 to play in the game.
The MSJC defense played solid on the night limiting the high scoring offense of Southwestern to 344 yards of total offense. The Eagles defense also caused 5 turnovers by the Jaguars. Mosley and Leroy Holt each had an interception for the Eagles while Dejon Brown led the team in tackles with 9. For the Eagles offense Morovick finished the night 20 of 41 passing for 204 yards with two interceptions and one TD. Hunkle caught 11 passes for 130 yards while Bryce Hintz had four catches for 40 yards.
The loss drops MSJC to 7-1 on the season and 4-1 in Mountain Conference action while Southwestern took over first place with the win moving to 5-0 in the league and 7-1 overall.
The Eagles will be back in action Saturday November 3rd when they host San Bernardino Valley College in the 2012 Homecoming game at Carl Quandt Stadium. Kick off on Saturday is set for 1 pm.
