The MSJC Athletic Department had some major successes during the 2013-14 school year highlighted by; conference championships, all conference performers, and at least 36 earned scholarships for the upcoming school year.
The biggest team success this past year came from the men's basketball team who earned a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference North Division Championship and advanced to the Elite Eight of the State Tournament. The Lady Eagles basketball team also captured a conference title for the second year in a row on their way to the Southern California Regional semi-finals. The MSJC women's soccer and men's tennis teams also earned their way into post season action. The Lady Eagle soccer team qualified for the play-offs for just the second time in school history while the men's tennis team earned a home play-off win and advanced to the Regional semi-finals. The women's volleyball team and the baseball team both also posted winning records for the year.
There were also numerous individuals who performed at a high level for MSJC, led by women's golfer Iris Chung, who was the individual Southern California Regional Champion. Chung went on to finish fourth at the State Finals. Dwayne Benjamin of the men's basketball team, Cora Lopez of the women's basketball team, and Vitor Galvao from the men's tennis team were all named Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Players of the Year in their sport. Melissa Lopez of the women's soccer team was named the conference's Goal Keeper of the Year. Galvao and teammate Bruno Campos paired to win the PCAC men's doubles championship. Benjamin, Lopez, Galvao, and Chung along with football players Dejon Brown and Michael Harrison also received All State recognition. In all 30 MSJC athletes earned either first or second team all conference accolades during the 2013-14 school year.
The biggest testament to the hard work put in by these student athletes this past year came in the form of scholarships. To date 36 MSJC student athletes have officially signed scholarships to four year universities. Six football and two men's basketball players have signed at the NCAA Division I level. Many of the others on the list have earned full scholarships at the NCAA Division II and NAIA levels. In all the current total of scholarship money earned by the 2014 class of MSJC student athletes tops $400,000. It is expected that 5-10 more student athletes will sign scholarships this summer.
