The 2013 MSJC women's volleyball team debuted on Saturday with an exhibition match against former Lady Eagles players coming up just short against the alumni squad dropping the match in 5 sets.
Coach Kevin Pratte, in his first season as coach of the Lady Eagles, was pleased with how the event turned out, but knows his team has some things to work on prior to the official season opener next Saturday. "We have a long way to go, but we remain extremely optimistic that we will continue to improve every day at practice to be the best team we can be," said Pratte. "At the end of the day we need to limit our errors and play more consistently".
Freshman setter Alissya Theis was one of many bright spots for the Lady Eagles as she efficiently ran the offense, creating opportunities for freshman right side hitter Taylor Kushner and sophomore middle blocker Alyssa Carillo. Kushner finished the day with a team high 15 kills while Carillo was right behind her with 14.
The exhibition featured over 20 alumni players and a large crowd as the alumni team started quickly by winning the first two sets 25-22 and 26-24. The current crop of Lady Eagles battled back to take sets 3 and 4, 25-15 and 25-22, before falling in the fifth 15-12. "I am so proud of our alumni, they played extremely well and they modeled great behavior for our student athletes."
The Lady Eagles will travel to Ridgecrest on Saturday August 31st to officially kick off the season when they take on Cerro Coso and Alan Hancock.
Alyssa Carillo had 14 kills on Saturday for MSJC, but the Lady Eagles came up just short of a victory losing in 5 sets to the alumni in an exhibition match on the San Jacinto Campus. MSJC officially kicks off the season on Saturday when they travel to Ridgecrest to play two matches.
