Cypress Downs Lady Eagles at Regionals
The MSJC softball team lost two games to Cypress over the weekend in the opening round of the Southern California Regional Tournament. MSJC fell in a close game on Saturday 4-0 and then lost on Sunday 12-3. Cypress came into the tournament as the no. 1 seed.
The Lady Eagles got a solid pitching performance on Saturday from Lynsie Caldwell, but could only manage two hits on offense. Caldwell allowed just six hits. Cypress scored one run in the first, two in the third, and added one in the fifth. Cypress' all state lead off hitter Kim Fraizer scored three of the Chargers four runs. Jennifer Strawbridge and Caldwell had MSJC's two hits.
In Sunday's game the Lady Eagles out hit Cypress 6 to 5, but committed seven errors on defense. The Chargers jumped out early scoring five runs off MSJC starting pitcher Samantha Martinez. The Lady Eagles struck back for two in the bottom of the first when Sam Felipe and Caldwell both drove in runs. MSJC added their third run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Angel Felipe led off the inning with a triple and was driven in by a Caldwell single. Martinez was relieved by Caldwell in the third and then re entered to pitch the seventh. They combined to allow five hits and six walks in the game.
The losses conclude the season for MSJC, who won the first conference championship in the program's history. The Lady Eagles finished the season at 18-20 overall.
