Defense Falters as Softball Team Loses to Mesa
The MSJC softball team only allowed two earned runs and picked up 9 hits in the game, but the defense committed six errors and the Lady Eagles lost a PCAC home game 9-5 to San Diego Mesa.
MSJC jumped into a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Rayna Winters and Lindsey Lashook both scored on a misplayed ground ball hit by Gabby Sanchez. The Lady Eagles would hold that lead until Mesa scored four times in the top of the third inning on just one earned run to take the lead for good. MSJC committed 3 errors in the top of the third and could not recover from the deficit. MSJC did cut it to 5-4 in the bottom of the third when Roni Alonzo drove a double into the left center field gap that scored Winters and Lashook, but Mesa answered back with a run in the top of the fourth and three more in the fifth to regain control of the game. Tiffany Lee picked up an RBI ground out in the bottom 6th to round out the Lady Eagles scoring.
Winters and Lauren Partnoff had some bad luck in the circle as each pitched well enough to keep their team in the game, but 7 unearned runs by the Olympians was too much to overcome. Alejandra Navarro and Lashook both had two hits for MSJC.
The Lady Eagles fell to 11-13 overall on the season and 2-6 in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play while Mesa improved to 11-15-1 and 6-4. MSJC will be back in action on Friday when they travel to San Diego City for a 3 pm game. The Lady Eagles return home on Monday March 24th when they will make up an earlier postponed game with Grossmont. Monday's game in Menifee will also start at 3 pm.
Roni Alonzo drove in two runs with a double for MSJC on Wednesday, but the Lady Eagles fell to visiting San Diego Mesa 9-5 in a PCAC game.
