The MSJC softball team matched second place Grossmont run for run through regulation before falling for the second straight game in extra innings 9-4 Friday in Menifee.
Grossmont took the lead in the top of the second inning with an unearned run, but the Lady Eagles quickly answered in the bottom half when Marissa Morales drove in Roni Alonzo with an RBI single. The Griffons added two more in the top of the fourth to retake the lead, but once again MSJC answered right back when Isabel Castellanos scored on a wild pitch and then Brenna Drake scored on an RBI single by Alonzo. Both teams would also score one time in the fifth with the Lady Eagles run coming when Drake drove home Jacinda Stewart. The game was forced into extra innings tied at 4-4.
MSJC ran into trouble in the top of the eighth when Grossmont erupted for five runs to finally take control of the game.
Alonzo, who was playing in her final home game as a member of the MSJC squad, finished her day going 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Alonzo has 5 homeruns on the season, which is tied for second in the single season record books at MSJC. The Lady Eagles have one game remaining in the season. Friday Castellanos and Rayna Winters each also had two hits.
The loss dropped the Lady Eagles to 14-23 overall and 3-14 in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play, while Grossmont improved to 20-17 and 12-5. MSJC will wrap up their season with a game at Imperial Valley on Wednesday at 1 pm.
