The MSJC volleyball team ended a four match losing streak on Friday night as they easily defeated visiting Southwestern in straight sets in a PCAC contest.
The Lady Eagles got off to a fast start in the match behind some solid play from Jessica Santos who had 7 kills and 3 service aces in the opening set on the way to an easy 25-11 win. Taylor Kushner also was strong in set number one with 5 kills. Southwestern fought back in the second set and built their lead to as much as 5, before MSJC came back to claim a 19-18 lead. From that point on MSJC closed out the set on a 7-1 run to win 25-19. The third set was more of the same as the Lady Eagles got ahead early and road 6 kills from Santos and 4 from Alyssa Carillo to another 25-19 win and a sweep.
Kushner finished the night with 17 kills and 16 digs, while Santos had 14 kills and 11 digs. Alissya Theis had 33 assists and Courtney Flowers added 15 digs. "I thought this was the most balanced our team has looked," said MSJC head coach Kevin Pratte, "I like the fact that we got Jessica and Alyssa more involved in the offense."
The Lady Eagles who improved to 9-6 overall and 1-4 in conference play were inspired by guest coaches Eric and Gisela Gosch. Eric is the owner of Gosch Auto Group and Gisela is a former member of the Hemet Unified School District Board. "In my career as a head coach I have had some great guest coaches," said Pratte, "Coach Eric and Coach Gisela gave a great motivational speech. It is always nice when my players get to meet some incredible leaders in our community."
MSJC returns to action on Wednesday when they host Cuyumaca College at 5 pm.
