The MSJC women's basketball team scored the winning basket with 1.5 seconds remaining Saturday night as they defeated Fullerton College 55-53 in a second round Southern California play-off game in Fullerton.
The Lady Eagles who struggled shooting the ball all night were able to control the boards and play strong defense down the stretch as they erased an 11 point second half deficit for the victory. MSJC shot just 30% for the night, but out rebounded the bigger Fullerton team 48-38, including a 24-13 advantage on the offensive boards.
The Lady Eagles trailed by 8 points with two minutes to play when Tina Fantroy made a traditional 3 point play when she was fouled on a 15 foot jump shot and added a free throw to cut the lead to 5. On MSJC's next possession Marina Villarreal hit her third three point basket of the second half to cut the Hornets lead to 2 at 53-51. After another defensive stop by MSJC, Ashley Jenkins made a lay up to tie the game with 38 seconds remaining. Fullerton could not score on the ensuing possession and with 10 seconds to play Faith Fantroy rebounded the ball and went the length of the floor, her shot went over the rim, but JoAnna Hernandez was there for the offensive rebound and winning basket. Fullerton could not get a shot off in the final seconds as Tina Fantroy stole the inbounds pass.
T. Fantroy led the Lady Eagles in scoring on the night with 15 points while Villarreall finished with 9. Ashley Jenkins scored 7 points, but more importantly pulled in a game high 15 rebounds including 8 at the offensive end. The win improved MSJC's season record to 23-7 while Fullerton concluded their season at 21-9.
MSJC will now face San Bernardino Valley College at San Bernardino on Wednesday in the Southern California Regional Semi-Finals. Game time on Wednesday is 5:30 pm.
