The MSJC women's basketball bounced back from a close loss on Friday afternoon to win games on Saturday and Sunday to claim the Consolation Championship at the Panther Pride Tournament in Rancho Cucamonga.
Friday it was cold shooting that did in the Lady Eagles as they lost to Saddleback 46-42 in a game that MSJC led for 36 of 40 minutes. MSJC shot just 31% from the field and did not make a three point basket in the contest. MSJC had a three point lead at the half and led by as much as eight in the second before a slow comeback by the Gauchos finally gave them the lead with just under 3 minutes to play. Brittany Neely came off the bench to lead the Lady Eagles in scoring with 13, Johnette Brown had 12, and Cora Lopez pulled in a game high 15 rebounds.
MSJC bounced back on Saturday as they cruised to a victory over Barstow College 73-54. The Lady Eagles used some strong defensive pressure to build a halftime lead of 33-16 and pushed the lead to as much as 32 in the second half. Brown led the way on offense for MSJC with 15 points while Erin Stanford came off the bench to score 14 points, grab 9 rebounds, make 5 steals, and pass out 5 assists.
In Sunday's consolation final MSJC again used a hard nosed half court defense to build a double digit halftime lead of 38-23 over Fullerton and went on to win 66-48. Brown again led in scoring with 14 while Lopez had a double double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, and DeShea Wilkes added 12 points. Sarai Ware had a very good all around game with 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists in the victory. Brown earned All Tournament honors for her play in the three games.
MSJC is now 7-2 on the season and will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Fresno to take part in the Fresno City College Tournament. The Lady Eagles open the tourney on Friday with a 3 pm game against Porterville.
Johnette Brown had three solid games at the Panther Pride Tournament at Chaffey College and was named to the All Tournament Team as the Lady Eagles went 2-1 on the weekend to improve to 7-2 overall.
