Lady Eagles Take Title at Grossmont Tourney

The MSJC women's basketball team won three straight games to capture the championship at the Grossmont Holiday Tournament held in El Cajon, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

The Lady Eagles used a late jump shot from Brandie McCann Saturday to hold off Citrus College 61-60. Danielle Smith was the team's leading scorer in that game with 22 points. McCann finished with 13 and Rayven Lewis added 10. In Sunday's semi-final game MSJC defeated Compton College 66-53. The Lady Eagles led the whole way building the lead to as much as 20 points in the second half. Smith once again had 22 points while McCann added 14 and Autum Jenkins had a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Nicole Villalobos also pulled in 10 rebounds.

In Monday night's championship the Lady Eagles defeated the host Grossmont team by a score of 67-63. This time McCann led the charge with 27 points while Smith had 20. Villalobos added 8 points and 15 rebounds for MSJC. Julia Oberst nearly had a double double as well with 8 points and 9 rebounds.

For her play in the tournament Danielle Smith was named the Most Valuable Player while Brandie McCann made the all tournament team. MSJC now stands at 13-4 on the season and are currently ranked #13 in the state. The Lady Eagles open Foothill Conference play Saturday January 3rd when they travel to Lancaster to take on Antelope Valley at 5 pm.
