The MSJC women's basketball team won three straight games over the weekend to bring home the championship of the 2012 Panther Pride Tournament at Chaffey College.
The Lady Eagles opened the tournament with a 65-26 win over Glendale College on Friday afternoon. In that game MSJC fought through a sluggish first half to take a 26-12 lead at the break, before opening up the lead in the second. Kerah Natividad led the Lady Eagles in scoring with 16 points while Tina Fantroy added 11 in the victory.
Saturday MSJC got off to a solid start and defeated Irvine Valley College 72-55 in the tournament's semi-final round. Fantroy this time led four Lady Eagles in double figures with 23 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Destiny Melton also recorded a double double with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Faith Fantroy had a very good all around game with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists, while Cora Lopez came off the bench to add 10 points.
In Sunday afternoon's championship game MSJC defeated the tournament host Panthers of Chaffey College 83-76. Chaffey scored the game's first basket, but that would be the only lead they had in the game as the Lady Eagles built a 10 point halftime lead 41-31. MSJC would push the lead to as much as 18 in the second half, but the Panthers rallied getting as close as four points in the final five minutes. T. Fantroy again was MSJC's leading scorer with 28 points she also grabbed a team high 12 rebounds. Melton added 15 points while Natividad and Sarai Ware both reached double figures with 11 points a piece. F. Fantroy finished the day with 7 points, 7 assists, and 7 rebounds.
The victories improved the Lady Eagles to 8-0 on the season. For their efforts over the weekend Faith Fantroy and Natividad were named to the All Tournament Team, while Tina Fantroy brought home Most Valuable Player honors. This is the second year in a row that MSJC has won the Panther Pride Tournament.
The Lady Eagles will be back in action this coming weekend when the travel to Fresno to take part in the Fresno City College Tournament. MSJC opens play on Friday at 3 pm against Modesto Junior College.
