Lady Eagles Win Two; Lose Final in OT

The MSJC women's basketball team won two of three games this weekend at the Antelope Valley Holiday Tournament.

On Thursday the sixth ranked Lady Eagles defeated 10th ranked Fresno City College 86-81 in an up tempo game. Tiffany Smith had a game high 32 points to go along with 10 rebounds for MSJC. Danielle Smith added 25 points and 9 assists. Autumn Spikes kicked in with 12 points on the afternoon.

Thursday's win advanced MSJC to the semi-final game Friday against Santa Barbara which the Lady Eagles won 82-76. MSJC had built up a 14 point lead before SBCC began to foul down the stretch leading to 40 free throw attempts in the game for MSJC. Danielle Smith led the way this time with 31 points and 6 assists while Tiffany Smith ended the game with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Nicole Villalobos added 12 points.

In Saturday's championship game the Lady Eagles took on #3 ranked Fullerton College and despite having a five point lead with 4 minutes to play MSJC fell in overtime 84-77. The Hornets were able to send the game into overtime with a game tying basket with :07 to play, MSJC couldn't get a shot off to at the buzzer. In OT two MSJC starters fouled out and 2 of 6 shooting from the foul line erased the Lady Eagles opportunity to win their second tournament of the year. In the championship game Spikes led five MSJC players in double figures with 20 while Danielle Smith added 19, Tiffany Smith 15, and Kyna Lewis had 11 points and 11 rebounds. For their performances in the tournament Danielle and Tiffany Smith were both named to the All Tournament Team.

The Lady Eagles now stand at 10-2 on the season and are off until the Grossmont Tournament December 28-30. MSJC returns home on January 4th when they host Cerro Coso in a Foothill Conference game at 5 pm.
