Lady Eagles to Kick off Hoops Season Thursday
The MSJC women's basketball team will begin the 2009-10 season tomorrow when they travel to Barstow to take on Porterville College in a 2 pm game.
The Lady Eagles enter the season coming off a 23-9 campaign a year ago with four players returning that saw time as starters in 2008-09. Danielle Smith a Third Team All State selection her freshman season leads the group of returnees, she averaged just over 20 points per game last year. Nicole Villalobos an honorable mention all conference player in 2009 also returns she averaged 10 points and 9 rebounds as a freshman. Kyna Lewis and Autum Jenkins also return after being part time starters and Nikki Herrera comes back after seeing significant action last year. The final returning player is Caysha Jackson who was a starter during the 2007-08 season.
A talented group of newcomers has also arrived on campus headlined by Irvine Valley transfer Tiffany Smith and Division I signee Autumn Spikes. Smith averaged 14 points a game as a freshman at IVC during the 2007-08 season. The 6' Spikes, signed with San Jose State after high school and will be looked upon to play both on the perimeter and in the post. Three local stand outs also join the Lady Eagles for the 09-10 season. Kaylee Moreno (Hemet), Danielle Reed (Beaumont) and Daniella Murrieta (San Jacinto) all will provide depth in the guard court. The final two members of the MSJC squad for this year are Jazmine Cook (Riverside North) and Enselita Tuitavake (Long Beach Poly) who both competed for the Lady Eagles volleyball team this fall.
MSJC, who has qualified for the Regional Tournament three straight seasons, was ranked #11 in the state in the pre-season poll. The Lady Eagles start the season with a rugged road schedule before hosting their first home game on December 15th.
