Late Push Gives MSJC Women Victory
The MSJC women's basketball team took control of a close game midway through the second half on Friday night to defeat visiting Palomar College 76-65.
In a foul plagued first half both teams struggled to find rhythm offensively and the teams went into the locker room tied at 31-31. The Lady Eagles jumped out to a six point lead early in the second half, but both teams battled back and forth with the Comets holding their final lead of the game at 47-46 with 11:03 to play. Erin Stanford made a driving lay-up with just under 11 minutes to go to give MSJC the lead for good. Over the next three minutes MSJC went on a 12-0 run to push the game out to an 11 point lead at 58-47. The Lady Eagles were able to keep the lead at 9 or more the rest of the way for the victory.
Johnette Brown finished the night with a team high 17 points, she also grabbed a game high 14 rebounds. Brittany Neely added 12 points while Sarai Ware and Tamara Herring both added 10 points. Cora Lopez ended her string of four straight double doubles due to foul trouble, but still finished the night with 8 points and 12 rebounds.
MSJC improved their season record to 13-4 and are 2-0 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. The Lady Eagles travel to San Diego City College on Wednesday for a 5 pm game, before returning home for a 5 pm contest against Grossmont on Friday January 17th.
