MSJC Women Avoid Upset, Set Up Title Shot
The MSJC women's basketball team scored the winning basket in the final 5 seconds on Wednesday night at San Diego Mesa to beat the Olympians 64-62 and set up a PCAC Championship game on Friday night.
The Lady Eagles will now host Southwestern at 5 pm Friday for the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championship as both teams will enter the game with identical 11-2 conference marks. MSJC was nearly derailed on Wednesday night however as Mesa, a team the Lady Eagles had beaten 71-36 earlier in the year, made it hard for MSJC to keep their six game winning streak alive. Sarai Ware scored the winning basket for MSJC when she drove the right side of the lane and hit a runner with 5 seconds to play, Mesa missed a desperation three pointer to win the game at the buzzer. The Olympians forced MSJC into shooting just 19 for 60 from the field and a miserable 1 for 16 from beyond the three point line.
MSJC survived though with a strong effort on the boards and some timely defense. Cora Lopez had another double double as she scored a team high 19 points and pulled down a game high 14 rebounds. DeShea Wilkes added 15 points and 7 rebounds for MSJC in the victory. Johnette Brown also reached double figures in scoring with 10.
The Lady Eagles are now 22-6 overall on the season. Friday's game with Southwestern will also mark sophomore night for MSJC as three Lady Eagles will be playing in their final regular season home game.
Sarai Ware made the game winning shot with 5 seconds remaining on Wednesday night as the MSJC women's basketball team stayed in a first place tie with Southwestern in the PCAC standings. MSJC will meet Southwestern on Friday at home at 5 pm in the final regular season game of the year.
