The MSJC women's basketball team lost for the first time this season on Sunday as they fell to the Fresno City Rams 88-77 in the championship game of the Fresno City Tournament.
The Lady Eagles who entered the weekend ranked #2 in the state started the tournament strong on Friday with a 78-63 victory over 11th ranked Modesto. In Friday's contest four Lady Eagles scored in double figures led by Faith Fantroy's 16 points. She also added a game high 11 assists. Gina Fernandez had 15 points in the victory while Destiny Melton added 13 and Kerah Natividad had a double double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
In Saturday's semi-final game MSJC got off to a fast start and never looked back as they defeated Merced College 59-41. Tina Fantroy had a season high 32 points in the win to go along with 9 rebounds. Natividad added 6 points and a team high 10 rebounds.
Sunday's championship against the state's 6th ranked team Fresno started well for MSJC, but the host Rams were able to pull away in the final three minutes to win the game. T. Fantroy had 32 points for the second straight day and Natividad had 20 points and 16 rebounds. The Lady Eagles led at the half by one point and the game went back and forth until late when Fresno was able to go on an 8-2 run to create a separation in the score.
Natividad and T. Fantroy were both named to the All Tournament Team for their efforts over the weekend.
The Lady Eagles are now 10-1 on the season and will have this weekend off before returning to action December 20-22nd when they take part in the San Diego Mesa Holiday Inn Invitational. MSJC opens play in the tournament with a 1 pm game against San Diego City College on Thursday.
