The MSJC women's basketball team will kick off their 2013-14 season this weekend when they host the MSJC Tip-Off Tournament Friday through Sunday.
The Lady Eagles who are coming off a 30-3 season a year ago will play their first game on Friday night at 7 pm against Antelope Valley. MSJC returns just two players from last season when they won the Foothill Conference title and finished runners-up in the State Championships. Cora Lopez, a 6 foot sophomore from Hemet High and Sarai Ware a 5'8 sophomore from West Valley High are the Lady Eagles lone players returning. Both Lopez and Ware played in every game last year for the Lady Eagles. They will be joined by a host of new players from area high schools.
Highlighting the freshmen class are several area players who earned high recognition as high school seniors. Johnette Brown comes to MSJC after leading 29 Palms to the DeAnza league title as a senior where she was named MVP of the conference. Brittany Neely of Rialto was named MVP of the San Andreas League last season as she also helped her team to a conference championship. Brittany Gatson of Tahquitz High was a first team all conference selection in the Mountain Pass League a year ago, while Tamara Herring was named to that same team the
previous year while playing for Perris Citrus Hill. DeShea Wilkes a freshman from Murrieta Valley also joins the Eagles this season after her team claimed the Division II CIF Southern Section crown last year. Erin Stanford of 29 Palms High will get her chance to play this season for MSJC after recovering from an ACL injury last year. Stanford was an All DeAnza league player her junior and senior seasons for the Wildcats. 6'1 San Bernardino Valley transfer Bree Madory will also be on the MSJC roster this season. Madory was the MVP of the Mountain Valley Conference her senior season at Riverside Notre Dame during 2010-11. Rounding out the 2013-14 roster for MSJC are twins Kenyetta and Kenyonna Fugate of Rialto, Kathryn Thomas of Perris High, and Alyssa Carillo of Great Oak.
This weekend's tournament kicks off Friday at 1 pm when Cerritos takes on Cypress College. Action continues at 3,5, and 7 pm Friday, games Saturday are at noon, 2,4, and 6 pm and the tournament concludes with games at 11 am, 1 & 3 pm on Sunday. The other four teams competing in the Tip-Off Tournament are; Chaffey, Palomar, Orange Coast, and Victory Valley.
Cora Lopez (top) and Sarai Ware (bottom) will look to lead the MSJC women's basketball team during the 2013-14 season. The pair are the only two returners from last season's State Runner-up team that finished the year with a 30-3 record.
