The MSJC women's basketball team concluded the most successful season in school history last Sunday when they played in the 2013 State Championship game. The Lady Eagles fell short against Mt. San Antonio College, but earned many honors along the way.
Tina Fantroy was named to the Most Valuable Player of the Foothill Conference after leading the league in scoring and helping MSJC to a conference title with a Foothill mark of 13-1. Tina was also named First Team All State making her just the second player in Lady Eagles history to be named All State two years in a row. Last season as a freshman Tina earned Third Team All State honors. Danielle Smith, a Lady Eagles point guard from 2008-2010, is the only other MSJC player to be named All State twice. Tina's accomplishments for the year did not end there as she was named to the All Tournament Team at the State Final Four after scoring 54 points in two games. During the regular season Tina earned MVP honors at both the Chaffey and San Diego Mesa Tournaments. Finally to top it off, Tina was named the CCCAA Female Student-Athlete of the Month for February by the California Community College Sports Information Association.
Faith Fantroy, Kerah Natividad, and Destiny Melton also had stellar sophomore seasons as all three were named First Team All Foothill Conference. Melton was honored at the State Final Four as well by making the All Tournament Team. Natividad was named the MVP of the Barstow Tournament in November, and also earned All Tournament honors at both the Fresno and Chaffey Tournaments. Faith Fantroy earned All Tournament honors at Chaffey and at San Diego Mesa helping MSJC to both titles. Head Coach Chris Mozga was the beneficiary of his team's great play by being named the Foothill Conference and Southern California State Coach of the Year.
The Lady Eagles set the school record for victories in a season with 30, and advanced to the State Final Four and State Title games for the first time in school history. MSJC also captured three tournament championships during the regular season bringing home titles from; Barstow, Chaffey, and San Diego Mesa. The Lady Eagles were runners-up at the Fresno City Tournament. The Foothill Conference title for MSJC was the first since 2010 and the first out right title since 2007.
Tina Fantroy earned numerous honors this past season for MSJC as she was named Foothill Conference MVP and First Team All State. Her sophomore teammates (bottom from L-R) Tina, Destiny Melton, Kerah Natividad, and Faith Fantroy also were honored as the Lady Eagles set numerous school records on their way to an appearence in the State Title game.
